Sanctuary Magazine was conceptualized several years ago by a few students who had a love for speculative fiction and wanted to create a safe space on campus for others who wrote it. The magazine was strong for about three years, even published in print, but then it flatlined for a while. In 2013, Michelle Bayman decided to bring it back to life. She and a small staff reimagined the magazine, its mission, and it’s aesthetic. In 2016, the candle logo was created by Emily Teitsworth in the hopes of it being a recognizable logo for the magazine on campus. Since then, the magazine has started to flourish again as an online magazine. Its aesthetic is continuing to mold into something unique and memorable. Because it has such a niche market of undergraduate writers and readers of speculative fiction (and other unconventional works), the next goal for the magazine is to become a national sensation.
